Abstract

Indiscriminate use of pesticides leads to loss of biodiversity. The pesticide affects a wide range of non-target organisms especially fishes. The present study deals with the impact of organophosphorus pesticide chlorpyrifos on histopathology of the digestive tract of fresh water snakehead murrel Channa striata. For the experiment, 0.04 ppm of sublethal concentration is selected and fishes were exposed for 30 days. Fishes showed severe histological alterations in the digestive tract. The degenerative changes include broken villi, necrosis, vacuole formation, cell swelling, distorted mucosa and submucosa were observed in the entire part of the digestive tract.
