Abstract

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is an important crop becoming protein sources for human nutrition. Many pests including plant parasitic nematodes limit the yield of common bean in the world. Among the plant parasitic nematodes Meloidogyne genus termed Root knot nematodes cause significant damage to common bean. This genus encompasses more than a hundred species that contain the most damages species in the world. They cause damage by taking nutrient and water from plant and by this way; plant growth and yield decreases, root galling and wilting are observed. Common bean varieties and genotypes may show responses as nematode resistant and susceptible reactions. In this chapter, genetics, molecular interactions and resistance response of common bean genotypes against root knot nematodes were given. Common bean and Root knot nematode interactions, molecular nematode plant interactions, determining the genotype resistance of common bean to root knot nematodes, the effect of root knot nematodes to common bean genotypes and influence of genotypes to nematode reproduction were discussed. Overall, this chapter is significant for understanding the resistance responses against root knot nematode for common bean variety and genotypes, and the plant nematode interactions in breeding for future studies.
