Abstract

Drought is major environmental crisis in India. Study of meteorological drought in Datia district is based on rainfall data which is taken from IMD (Indian Meteorological Department) Pune and NDVI value. Long term deviation index (Di) during 1978 to 2012, is showing that 71-% years (25 years) has normal rainfall (no drought to mild drought, ±25-% deviation from long mean average) and 29-% years (10 years) has rainfall deficit (mild to severe drought). Three years 1979, 86 & 2002 show deficiency -67%, -51% & -64% respectively from long mean rainfall which falls under severe drought. NDVI value is derived by LANDSAT data; is also showing the impact of rainfall variation in 1978, 1990 & 2002 as mild, no & severe drought respectively. Rainfall data of last three decades is showing that rainfall pattern is very irregular and every decade has one heavy (La Nina) and one least rainfall. So it is suggested to prepare a rainwater harvesting plan and store the water in suitable areas for irrigation and domestic need in drought years.
